RESILIENT COMMUNITY
STUDENTS
MAKING MUSIC, SHIRTS—AND MONEY
Laguna students know how to rally! Following the mudslides,
our talented Laguna musicians organized a concert at SOhO
Restaurant & Music Club to benefit Direct Relief and the work
the organization is doing to help those affected by the Thomas
Fire and Montecito mudslides.
During the event, Laguna student and drummer Clay
Rodgers ’18, whose family home suffered tremendous damage
during the mudslides, shared his personal memories of the
disaster—including wading through waist-deep mud for a mile
before getting picked up by the local sheriff. His greatest lesson
was that his family is more important than any “thing” they had
lost in the tragedy.
Donations from the concert, combined with sales from SB
Strong t-shirts designed by Sofia Fouroohi-Martin ’19, totaled
nearly $5,000!
About the Shirt
Following the night of the Montecito mudslides, Laguna student
Sofia Fouroohi-Martin ’19 felt the need to help. With a passion for art
and drawing, she quickly took the lead on creating a t-shirt she could
sell to help support relief efforts. Using her art skills, she created the
SB STRONG logo, printed a mass of t-shirts, and partnered with Direct
LAGUNA BLANCA MAGAZINE Relief and the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation. We applaud
Relief International to make sure the funds went to good use. All in
all, Fouroohi-Martin raised $6,000, which is being distributed to Direct
her grit in launching this project and seeing it through to completion!
SB Strong shirts are still available for $25 at Santa Barbara shops
Plum Goods and The Shopkeepers.
