Celebrating Student-Athlete
Margaux Murphy
When it comes to giving it her all, student-
athlete Margaux Murphy ’19 knows no limits. A
three-sport athlete, she excels on the field, in the
classroom, and on the community service circuit.
In celebration of her hard work, she was honored
as Laguna Blanca’s selected recipient of the 2018
Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award by the Santa
Barbara Athletic Round Table.
“When I think about Margaux, I think about a
kid who really wants to learn,” says Laguna Blanca
Athletic Director and Girls Volleyball Coach Jason
Donnelly. “She’s willing to do whatever it takes to
help her team and herself grow.”
Murphy plays on Donnelly’s varsity volleyball
team, as well as on the varsity teams for both
soccer and sand volleyball. Varsity Soccer Coach
Kevin Shertzer shares similar respect for Murphy’s
tenacity, noting her discipline in working her way
up into a starting position last season, eventually
scoring some crucial goals that helped the team
secure the league title.
Still, Murphy’s athleticism and grit are just
two of her many strengths. In 2018, she won
the Ambassador Scholarship Award at the
Global Leadership Connection. She has logged
more than 200 hours of community service as a
member of the National Charity League and on
other volunteer opportunities. She’s also involved
in Laguna’s Middle School Mentorship program
and has served as a Laguna Student Ambassador
for the last three years—all while maintaining a
strong GPA.
What Donnelly appreciates most about Murphy
is how much she cares for other people.
“Margaux embodies all the qualities you want in
a student athlete: she shows up, she does her job,
and she cares greatly for others,” Donnelly says.
