GET READY FOR JOGATHON--
OCTOBER 16!

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO BE AN EVENT SPONSOR

Mark your calendar! The Annual Jogathon is a great way for the school community to get together and for our students to participate in raising vital funds to support Laguna's EK-12 physical education and athletic programs.

Through the generosity of the Laguna community, we have some of the finest physical education programs, athletic fields, and facilities in all of Santa Barbara. Thanks to you, these opportunities at Laguna are enhanced by the Jogathon. This year, contributions raised will also benefit some of our outdoor recreation areas with new shade structures and furnishings that will add comfort and fun for students on both campuses.

Event sponsorship opportunities are still available and always appreciated! All sponsorship gifts received by Saturday, September 26 will be recognized on our commemorative Jogathon tee shirt!

QUESTIONS? Contact Raychel Muenke or Erika Ronchietto.

FALL DRAMA AUDITIONS FOR GR. 7-12
Thursday, 9/24

Auditions for the fall drama production of Harvey will be held on Thursday, September 24 in Spaulding Auditorium at 3:30PM.

Audition sign-ups will be posted beginning Monday 9/21 outside of Ms. Ortner's office, on the back door of the theater.

General auditions for students in grades 7-12 will be held from 3:30-5:30 and call backs will take place immediately afterward at 5:45.

If a student would like to audition but has a conflict, please see Ms. O and she will coordinate an alternate audition time.

Students will choose a side (a pre-selected scene from the script) as soon as they arrive for their audition and will fill out an audition form. Nothing needs to be prepared in advance so come out and give it a try!

There is a wonderful film of Harvey with James Stewart which students may find helpful to watch. It is slightly different from the play, but gives a good sense of the characters and the plot.

If you have any questions please see Ms. O in her office or send an e-mail to dortner@lagunablanca.org.

LAGUNA FOOTBALL IS ON FIRE!
McNeel, Owls rumble over Coast Union

By Presidio Sports

Wakelin McNeel's powerful running led Laguna Blanca to its third straight victory, a 44-0 shutout at Coast Union in Cambria last Friday night. McNeel rushed for 158 yards on nine carries and scored four touchdowns. He also returned the second-half kickoff 78 yards for a score to give the Owls a 27-0 lead.

The Owls defense played a terrific game. It recorded five sacks, made four stops inside the 20-yard line, intercepted three passes and recovered a fumble. Christian Fowler, Darwin Miguel and Robert Estrada picked off the passes and Anton Homeniuk recovered the fumble.

Homeniuk, a sophomore, also caught a touchdown pass and freshman Josh Baron broke off a 42-yard touchdown run.

NEXT GAME IS HOME:  Saturday, 9/26 at 1PM

STUDENT VOLUNTEERS PREPARE FOR HOMELESS OUTREACH

As a follow-up to our EK-12 Sock Drive conducted last spring, more than 40 student volunteers in grades 7-12 gathered on campus last Saturday to attend a street outreach training (Sock Institute) in preparation for the upcoming sock distributions at Alameda Park on Thursday 9/24 and 10/8.

For those unable to attend the first training, there is a make-up training session taking place this Sunday, 9/20 from 12-3PM in the Middle School Rugg Room.

QUESTIONS? Contact Experiential Learning Coordinator Ashley Tidey.

ABOUT THE SOCK INSTITUTE

The Sock Institute is Laguna's new experiential learning program designed to train the next generation of leaders in the field of global health. The "sock" in the institute's name stands for the real life actions we know are crucial to genuine learning, such as providing new clean socks to real people who need them. It is also a tool of engagement used to connect to the unsheltered homeless. Through a series of carefully planned and interconnected real-world experiences, Laguna Blanca is excited to consider moves towards the establishment of a global health curriculum that is truly appropriate to the demands of the 21st century and that will produce the leaders who can meet these new challenges.

There's Still Time to Join Cross Country!

The cross country team is looking for a few more runners to join the five boys and one girl who are currently on the team. Although the team is small, it has had great success in the past and is looking forward to another strong year. "Cross country is a great sport for cross-training for soccer and other winter sports," said Coach David Silverander, a 2001 Laguna alum. Students can also run cross country if they play another sport outside of school, such as club soccer.

Coach Silverander said that running is a good sport for kids who didn't learn team sports when they were younger because there are no rules to learn. "Come try a practice and see how it goes," he said. "Sometimes, people turn out to be much better runners than they realize."

Students on the team said Coach Silverander is easy to talk to and that he makes practice fun. "He really connects with us," said 10th grader Clay Rodgers.

QUESTIONS? Please contact Coach Silverander 243.8002
