GET A SNEAK PEEK AT LAGUNA'S NEW MODERN LEARNING
ENVIRONMENT
As the students quickly departed for their summer
breaks, our facilities team joined forces with a crew from Zimmerman
Construction to transform many areas throughout the Hope Ranch and
Montecito campuses. Students at the Lower School arrived on campus this
week with new storage cubbies that even our smallest students can
easily reach, colorful carpet tile that is durable and cozy for play,
and vibrant colored walls.
The Hope Ranch Campus was bustling with energy as students got a
glimpse inside three classrooms that were renovated over the summer
and features elements to create a modern learning environment
including:
- Flexibility:
Using furniture that allows for various configurations of the
classroom fosters small group, large group, or seminar capacity
in one setting.
- Color
and Comfort: As the importance of comfort should not be
diminished in relation to the creation of learning-centered
spaces, we use carpeting, ergonomically supportive chairs, LED
lighting, and vibrant colors.
- Sound:
The addition of carpet and the replacement of ceiling tiles
reduces unnecessary and distracting sound in the classrooms.

PARENT WELCOME COFFEE
The annual parent welcome coffee served up lots of
hugs, laughter, and a minor shopping frenzy as everyone suited up
with the latest and greatest Laguna spirit wear. If you missed it,
there will be more shopping opportunities at the Jogathon event next
month. Thank you to everyone who created and attended this kick-off event---the
spirit of friendship and community was contagious!

Laguna instructors and students kick-off the new
school year with Project-Based Learning Initiatives
In preparation for the school's new 8-day rotating
schedule and the deeper learning opportunities offered by extended
class periods, Laguna faculty spent time this summer developing
project-based units. "It is in the spirit of collaboration that
we seek to create meaningful connections across subject areas and
grade levels," explains faculty members Trish McHale and Andra
Wilson. Before students returned to campus this week, faculty proudly
presented the projects to their colleagues for feedback.

This is a great community service opportunity to make
a beach cleanup an EK-12, faculty, staff, and family event for Laguna
Blanca School! Make sure to show your school spirit and sport your
LAGUNAWEAR! Laguna Blanca will be represented at Miramar/Hammonds
Beach for the sixth year in a row!
It's a B.Y.O. event again this year, so please bring
your own (B.Y.O.) bag or bucket or something to collect your trash
and recyclables in, gardening gloves, and reusable water bottle (LBS
is providing 5-gallon jugs of water to share!), to further reduce
waste. Wear lots of sunscreen and bring a hat!
Volunteers under 18 who are cleaning the beach without
a parent/guardian must bring a signed waiver
form with a parent or guardian signature. Parents with children

FAMILY PICNIC ON THE GREEN
A NEW & LOVED TRADITION!
Laguna alumnus Palmer Jackson '82 and his band The
Doublewide Kings made a splash on
Friday evening at our first ever Family Picnic on the Green. As
the sun set on Hope Ranch and the twang of Americana Rock filled the
air, concert goers shared glasses of wine and unpacked picnic baskets
filled with goodies. Here's
the SCOOP helped guests cool down with delicious
selections of gelato and sorbet. The relaxing evening was the
perfect end to a busy first week back at Laguna Blanca.
Can't wait for a replay of this event next year!

FALL DRAMA AUDITIONS FOR GR. 7-12
Monday, 9/24
Auditions for the fall drama production of Harvey will be
held on Thursday, September 24 in Spaulding Auditorium at 3:30PM.
Audition sign-ups will be posted beginning Monday 9/21
outside of Ms. Ortner's office, on the back door of the theater.
General auditions for students in grades 7-12 will be
held from 3:30-5:30 and call backs will take place immediately
afterward at 5:45.
If a student would like to audition but has a
conflict, please see Ms. O and she will coordinate an alternate
audition time.
Students will choose a side (a pre-selected scene from
the script) as soon as they arrive for their audition and will fill
out an audition form. Nothing needs to be prepared in advance so come
out and give it a try!
There is a
wonderful film of Harvey with James Stewart which students may find
helpful to watch. It is slightly different from the play, but gives a
good sense of the characters and the plot.

who will be staffing the center daily during Periods A, B, C, G, and

There's Still Time to Join Cross Country!
The cross country team is looking for a few more
runners to join the five boys and one girl who are currently on the
team. Although the team is small, it has had great success in the
past and is looking forward to another strong year. "Cross
country is a great sport for cross-training for soccer and other
winter sports," said Coach David Silverander, a 2001 Laguna
alum. Students can also run cross country if they play another sport
outside of school, such as club soccer.
Coach Silverander said that running is a good sport
for kids who didn't learn team sports when they were younger because
there are no rules to learn. "Come try a practice and see how it
goes," he said. "Sometimes, people turn out to be much
better runners than they realize."
Students on the team said Coach Silverander is easy to
talk to and that he makes practice fun. "He really connects with
us," said 10th grader Clay Rodgers.
