I grew up sailing with my family in New Jersey at our local yacht club. I have three older

siblings and got to see them race and practice. Part of the parents' responsibility was to
volunteer to run the races for the kids. So from five years old, I was tagging along with my
parents on the safety boats. As I got older, I continued to do the same and went along with my
siblings' sailing coaches. I have been the principal race officer of lots of different sailing events,
including college sailing regattas with over thirty colleges racing. Being the principal race officer
means I’m in charge of everything on the water.

Since sailing is such a big part of my life, and there are lots of volunteer opportunities in the

sport, I volunteered a lot! Eventually, I wanted to find something even more meaningful. That’s
when I found the emergency department at Cottage Hospital. I actually do a lot and see a lot
as a volunteer. I wouldn’t trade the experiences I have had there for anything. One minute an
elderly man could be coming through the door looking for his wife, and then the next minute
a baby not breathing is being rushed in by its mother. I am the first point of contact for all
patients coming through the main door.
