Special Guest Speaker Director of College Counseling Matt
Struckmeyer
ABOUT MATT'S
TALK
In the last
year or two, highly selective colleges have begun to push back
against the trend of stressed-out, over-packaged students who
push themselves in unhealthy ways to impress the admissions
office. The Harvard Graduate School of Education published
a report last spring, signed by more than 200 leading
stakeholders in admission, called "Turning the Tide," a
document meant to restore happiness, balance, and sanity to the
high school years.
Chiefly, the report calls on college admissions offices to value
depth over breadth, discouraging exotic and expensive
resume-padding—such as service trips abroad and long lists of
extracurriculars—in favor of more ordinary pursuits.
Matt will present an overview of "Turning the Tide,"
suggesting ways that parents can enter the conversation and
influence their children in healthy directions. He will also
explain that elite colleges have no set formula for admissions,
but instead look for joy, vitality, and enthusiasm in each
applicant.

THE POWER OF A GOOD STORY
|
|
|
This week,
Laguna welcomed back actor, comedian, and poet John Morello to
the Spaulding stage! His show, Dirt, is a powerful
performance that stays with students and adults alike long after
it is over. More than just a motivational presentation, Dirt
inspires people to take action by urging them to reflect upon
the choices that they make in their daily lives—from what they
put into their bodies and how they treat themselves, to how they
treat one another. To learn more about the story and characters
in Dirt, and John's other work, click here.

Although Laguna alumna Sofia Melograno '07 has always been
in touch with her life purpose, which is to “work in a space that
benefits the greater good in some way,” she is surprised at how
she got there. Growing up, her family was dedicated to
philanthropic giving. Her grandparents have a foundation that
supports the arts, advancing cultural and social causes: The
Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation. Her grandfather often said
to her, “there’s nothing wrong with a little capitalism… as long
as you try to make a difference." READ MORE.

WHY DEVICE-FREE DINNERS ARE A HEALTHY CHOICE
|
|
It may seem obvious that eating dinner with your
family is a good thing. Research provides plenty of support for the
importance of family dinner for kids: Learning vocabulary, fewer
behavior problems, less substance abuse, and healthier eating are
some of the positive outcomes. But how is
family dinner changing in response to the massive technological
changes in American society?
To find out more about how families are managing
devices during family dinner, Common Sense Media commissioned a
poll of nearly 900 families with children between the ages of 2
and 17 years old...

LS BOOK CLUB EXAMINES GRIT, THE POWER OF
PASSION AND PERSEVERANCE

Talent,
effort, skill, and achievement. How are these attributes related,
which is the most important for success (both immediate and
long-term), and how does this apply to our Lower School learning
community? Please consider joining in the conversation as we
learn about the research and potential application of Angela
Duckworth’s work. To take part in the Parent Book Club (PBC),
RSVP to Darla McDavid so we can order
