evolving needs of our children. Please take the time to show what
matters to you. Please donate.

LAGUNA BLANCA DEFEATS CARPINTERIA IN DIVISION 4
PLAYOFF MATCH
|
|
By Barry
Punzal, Noozhawk Sports
Editor
Kai Nakamura '20 scored a crucial
second-round singles win against Carpinteria's Jeremy Saito to
give Laguna Blanca a 7-5 lead, and the Owls won four sets in the
third round to pull out an 11-7 victory between local teams in
the first round of the CIF Division 4 boys tennis playoffs.
"In their previous meeting several weeks ago,
Saito came out on top in an absolute grind of a tie-break set,
but it was the Laguna freshman who won this bout," said
Laguna coach Trevor Thorpe of the key set.
In the third round, Conor Scheinberg '18
and Jason Barnick '18 completed a sweep in doubles and Victor
Liu '18, Nakamura and Alex Furukawa '18 won
their singles sets. Laguna won eight of nine singles sets.
Carpinteria got sweeps from the No. 2 doubles team
of Cameron Grawlewski-Jacob Ascencio and No. 3 Kirby
Zapata-Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson.
"Each of our doubles teams played great
today," Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant said. "But for
us to win, we had to knock off the Owls tandem of Conor
Scheinberg/Jason Barnick, and we just could not do it. Each of
our sets against them started off very close but they seemed to
pull away at the end. I give them a lot of credit, as they played
very well and stepped up big when they needed to.
"Losing when we played our best and losing to
a quality team actually makes losing easier to handle,"
Bryant continued. "It was just a bummer we had to face them
in the first round."
The Owls
play at home in the second round vs. Cabrillo tomorrow (Friday,
5/12) at 3pm. Please plan to attend and help cheer on the Boys
Tennis team!

PHYSICAL SCIENCE & AP PHYSICS STUDENTS TAKE
LEARNING TO NEW HEIGHTS
|
|
Whether
you’re being blasted backwards at 100mph on Superman: Escape
from Krypton, or taking a leisurely ride down a six story
plunge on the Jet Stream, all of the fantastic forces,
velocity, and acceleration that you feel are a part of physics!
LBS Physical Science students traveled to Six
Flags Magic Mountain Amusement Park for “Science Day” last
Wednesday. This year they were accompanied by AP Physics
students. The older scientists served as problem solving support
for the younger ones while they completed hands-on activities
which tested their understanding of Newtonian Mechanics. Students
used their phone’s sensors to collect data that was later used to
calculate forces acting on a rider at different points during the
rides. With these forces, students will be able to calculate the
work and power necessary to move riders through a ride; find the
centripetal acceleration associated with the circular motion
component of certain rides; and use their understanding of the
law of conservation of energy to approximate velocities and
altitudes of riders at different points in the ride.
As part of the trip, each team of students was
also required to develop an inquiry question that they could test
in the park with the use of the smart phone’s accelerometer. The
questions ranged from "How do g-forces affect balance?"
to "How does the vertical drop of a ride affect
vision?" Dizzying, but fun!

three categories and worked as teams to try and earn points for
their house. Categories to choose from included: Laguna legends,
math, science, social science, spelling, music/art, and faculty
facts.
The
winners will be announced on Monday at assembly. At the end of
this month, the winners will enjoy an outing off campus from

LAGUNA GETS A VISIT FROM THE WEATHER MAN
|
|
Earlier
this week, third grade science students welcomed a special guest
speaker: KEYT's Chief Meteorologist Alan Rose.
Mr. Rose
gave a great presentation about different kinds of weather and
explained how various kinds of weather are created. He even
talked about the fact that he first became interested in weather
in elementary school (at around the same age) when a
meteorologist came to speak to his class.
On the Tuesday evening Channel 3 news, Mr. Rose shared
some kinds words about his visit with our third grade class, as
well as the above picture.

LAGUNA TOTS CLUB RECEIVES "CLEAN
COMMUNITY" AWARD FROM MAYOR
|
|
Congratulations
to Teens on the Scene (TOTS) for being recognized by the City of
Santa Barbara at the annual "Looking Good Santa
Barbara" awards program on Wednesday. Mayor Helene Schneider
presented the TOTS group with the Clean Community award at the
special luncheon. In its 13th year, the purpose of the awards
program is to acknowledge individuals/groups that have
demonstrated a consistent and ongoing commitment to the
well-being and betterment of our community.
TOTS is a teen-led community service and
leadership group that was started in Santa Barbara in 2014 by
three local boys who were in junior high at the time. The group
has since expanded to include all the local public high schools
and several junior highs. In 2016, the Laguna Blanca chapter of
Teens on the Scene was started by sophomore Kyle Aitcheson '19,
who continues to serve as the Laguna club president, as well as
the TOTS Executive Board President of Events.
The main goal of TOTS is to provide helpful
service when needed throughout the community of Santa Barbara.
Through this, teens get a variety of experiences and see ways
they can help enrich their community.
Some of the organizations and service projects
that the TOTS chapters have helped include: Special Olympics,
Earth Day, Challenger Football mentoring, Teen Court, Unity
Shoppe holiday event, Santa Barbara Food Bank, Flower Empower
(creating and delivering bouquets), local beach clean ups, and
park clean ups.
Keep it
up, TOTS!

INTRODUCING THE WORLD OF COLLEGE TO STUDENTS IN
GRADES 9 & 10: MAY 15
|
|
"Welcome
to the College Universe" is intended as a broad introduction
to the basic college choices most Laguna Blanca students will
consider: small, medium, and large; public vs private; liberal
arts vs. pre-professional. The program will begin in Spaulding
Auditorium with presentations by three colleges: UCSB, the
University of San Francisco, and Occidental College--followed by
a Q&A. At 10:15am, the assembled ninth and tenth graders will
shift to the gym for a presentation by Laguna's Matt Struckmeyer,
for an overview of how to prepare for selective college admission
and determine what matters and what doesn't.

ART SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR ART IN THE PARK
EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM FOR SANTA BARBARA HOMELESS COMMUNITY
|
|
Laguna’s
Sock Club continues to evolve and is aiming to help the homeless
community with more than socks, blankets, and coats. As part of
her senior project, Sock Club Co-President Grace MacNeil is
helping the Sock Club organize an Art in the Park: Art
Empowerment program, which will begin this May. This program
will use art as a form of empowerment and expression with Santa
Barbara's homeless. She is coordinating this project not only
with Americorps but also alongside a
collaborative of community organizations who assist with
providing the homeless with weekly meal sharing, medical care,
housing, item donations, and more.
If any families have art supplies in good
condition that they no longer need, donations are greatly
appreciated and needed by Wednesday, May 17. Donations are
welcome after that date, as well. Please contact Grace
MacNeil if you are willing to support the Sock
Club in giving art supplies. A table will be located outside of
Ms. Tidey’s classroom, or you can drop off items to the main
office on either campus.
Examples of art supplies that are needed:
colored pencils, paint brushes, acrylic paint, watercolor paint,
adult coloring books, sketchbooks, and postcard stamps (for
mailing handmade postcards to family members)

Students
interested in inviting a guest from another school should
complete and submit a Dance Guest Pass form.
We hope to see you there!

SEEKING HOST FAMILY FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENT
|
|
Laguna
has become a member school of ASSIST, an organization which
places outstanding international students on one-year
scholarships in some of the finest independent schools in the
country. It is an opportunity for high school students coming
from other countries to make contributions to our community and
to develop a deeper understanding of American culture.
We are looking for a Laguna family with a daughter
who would like to be (or share) a Host Family role for a new
exchange student from Madrid, Spain. This female student will
join next year's 11th grade class at Laguna and is an outstanding
scholar who has “served her peers and school in leadership roles
and has received numerous awards for successful projects and
competitions in and out of school." She is well-grounded and
wants to take full advantage of this opportunity to expand her
personal, academic, and international horizons.
If you are interested in information about the
process of becoming a host family for either the whole 2017-2018
school year, or splitting the hosting duties with another family,
please contact International Student Coordinator Carol Nordgaarden.
