FUNDRAISING NEVER TASTED SO GOOD
|
Laguna’s sixth grade students are proud to
announce their delicious class service project to benefit Make a Wish Foundation, a
non-profit organization who arranges experiences described as "wishes"
to children with life-threatening medical conditions. The
students are inviting the entire Santa Barbara community to
attend this special fundraiser at Here’s the Scoop in
Montecito on Sunday, May 15 from 2:00-4:00PM. "When our
Santa Rosa House was brainstorming ideas for a fun, inventive
fundraiser that would help wishes come true, the first thing we
thought of was gelato,” explains event leader Madeleine Nicks
’22. “Our whole class has been involved from the start by
creating the event poster, and now hanging it all around town.”
At the event, guests will have
an opportunity to meet local organic farmer—Tom Shepherd—who
provides the fresh, organic produce for Here’s the Scoop;
view the documentary film about the Shepherd Farms-to-Scoop
process (starring many members of the sixth grade class); and
enjoy a sweet treat for a good cause!
Admission is free and Here’s
the Scoop has generously offered to donate 20% of the day’s
proceeds to Make a Wish Foundation!

We're experiencing a huge change in the way kids
communicate and interact. How do smartphones, online gaming, and
multitasking affect our families? Are we addicted to our devices?

CHANGING LIVES ONE LIGHT AT A TIME
|
This week, Unite to Light, a local
nonprofit that’s making a difference across the globe one light
at a time, spoke to Laguna Blanca students about their
work.
Students learned how the organization provides
light to regions of the world without electricity, thus
eliminating the health and environmental issues associated with
existing light sources used by these populations, such as
kerosene. In doing so, they provide children the
opportunity to study in the evening. The entire solar lighting
project started at UCSB after a visiting professor from Ghana
challenged researchers to create something that would
change the world—an affordable reading light. As many know, UCSB
has been involved for many years in research on higher efficiency
visible LEDs, led by Prof. Shuji Nakamura—a Laguna parent; more
efficient solar cells, led by Prof. Alan Heeger; and more
efficient batteries, led by Prof. Dan Morse. Since their
involvement, there are currently 80,000 lights in 67 countries on
four continents.
The solar powered lights retail for $20/each and for each light
purchased, one is donated to those in need.
Unite to Light provides community service opportunities for
students. If interested, please call 805-250-8320.
