SIXTH
GRADERS ORGANIZE MAKE-A-WISH FUNDRAISER
|
Reprinted
from Montecito Journal
This Sunday, May 15, Here's the Scoop on Coast Village Road will
donate 20% of proceeds to the Make-A-Wish Foundation as part of a
fundraiser organized by Laguna Blanca School sixth graders. The
fundraiser, organized by Madeleine Nicks '22 and her
classmates, is part of a school project in which advisory classes
pick charities to support throughout the year. "We chose
Make-A-Wish because they help grant wishes for sick children and
help bring happiness to them during a difficult time in their
lives," Nicks told us.

LAGUNA
BLANCA TURNS INTO A CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION FOR THE DAY
|
|
This week, eighth grade students engaged in a
cross-curricular critical thinking project to crack the case of Viruses
and Villains.
The entire class became Crime Scene Investigators to apply the
skills of investigation to real-world situations. This CSI-like
adventure was a culminating Experiential Education project which
is part of the 8th Grade TIEs (Thematic Interdisciplinary
Explorations) program—specifically the Social Justice Unit. The
project also reflects the new wave of creative project-based learning
that has found firm footing in Laguna Blanca’s curriculum.

FOURTH
GRADERS HONOR GOOD CITIZENS AT
3RD
ANNUAL CITIZENSHIP BREAKFAST
|
|
In celebration of their unit on citizenship and
what it means to be a good citizen, fourth graders invited local
community members who exemplify good citizenship and honored them
at a special breakfast this Wednesday. Guests of honor ranged
from fire fighters to doctors to dance and karate instructors.
Each student introduced his/her guest and shared inspiring
qualities of their honoree. They also shared countless ideas
about what it means to be a good citizen: donating to a charity,
giving food to the hungry, donating clothes to a local
goodwill, adopting pets that need a homes, being honest, obeying
the law, helping others, and much more.
The heartfelt keynote address
was delivered by Sue and Ed Birch (Santa Barbara Foundation's
2016 Man of the Year). They shared with the guests how their
foundation--Mosher Foundation--supports non-profit educational, healthcare, and
performing arts institutions in the Santa Barbara area. They
talked about the importance of giving the gifts of time and
talent to those who need it and discussed with the students the
three things they can do with their money: spend it, save it, or
give it away. They even gave the fourth grade class $100 and the
opportunity to operate like their own foundation board and vote
on which local non-profit to support. Out of the three worthy
non-profits described, the majority of the Owls voted for SB Wildlife Care Network to receive a $100 donation from Laguna's fourth
grade class.
We're proud of you, fourth graders!!

THE
KINDERGARTEN WILDFLOWER PROJECT
|
This week as a part of the kindergarten plant
unit, students learned the importance of flowers in our
ecosystem. They explored how native insects need native plants to
survive and native honey bees need wildflowers to live! As the
honey bee population is dwindling, simply planting wildflowers
can help provide these pollinators a food source while making our
surroundings more beautiful.

5 SIMPLE
STEPS TO A HEALTHY MEDIA DIET
|
Many parents struggle with exactly how much screen
time is OK for their kids. Is a half-hour show OK but a
full-length movie "bad"? How much gaming should you
allow when your kid also uses his computer for homework? Does
Wikipedia count as "reading"? And when does a passion
for say, video games, become problematic? The truth is, there is
no magic formula. And just as every family differs in what they
eat, when they eat, and what they like, a healthy media diet is
different for every family.

A FURRY
FRIEND VISITS GRADE 5
|
|
Last Friday, Mark Banda of the Newfoundland Club
of Southern California visited the Hope Ranch campus with his
Newfoundland, Bucyk (bue-zek). The fifth grade is currently
reading The Captain’s Dog, a book about the Lewis and
Clark expedition, with Captain Meriwether Lewis’ dog--Seaman--as
the narrator. Seaman was a Newfoundland, and besides originally helping
fishermen pull in their nets, Newfies also helped haul hay on
farms.
Bucyk demonstrated how he pulls carts and sleds,
just like the working dogs used to do, providing great evidence
of the helpful partnership that humans have with their dogs.
