FRESHMAN SULLY ISRAEL
DESIGNS HYPOTHETICAL CHILDREN'S MUSEUM
|
Congratulations
to freshman Sully Israel (pictured in yellow in middle),
who won Honorable Mention at the Architectural Foundation of
Santa Barbara's annual High School Architectural Design
Competition in Santa Ynez.
In a competition with 40 other students, Sully
designed a hypothetical 6,200 square foot gallery space that
moved him onto the final round. Inspired by MOXI, a children’s
museum currently under construction in Santa Barbara, the
competitors were given a packet with guidelines, measurements,
city codes, and seven hours to design a multi-sensory educational
experience space. "I thought a lot about human movement
through the building, including multiple entrances, hallways, and
a tower entrance on the corner of the lot," Sully explains.
He recalls that the judges liked his garden design with lots of
landscaping, different eco-systems for kids to learn about,
including a desert greenhouse, jungle, and creek.
Sully was one of twelve finalists who was invited
back to make a presentation, with four minutes to explain why his
design was successful, and five minutes to answer questions from
the four architectural board members. Each finalist was scored on
a point system, and Sully received honorable mentions.
"The most unique part of my building was the
gallery I designed—an interactive ‘sense of sight’ room. That was
the hardest part of the whole competition, doing the exhibit
itself. I even had a five foot interactive eyeball."

GOT FOMO?
"Fear of Missing
Out" can make social media-using teens feel stressed Here's
how you can help!
|
Teens
text, tweet, snap, and post like crazy. In fact, about half of
teens use social media every day, and for some, this means
checking Instagram or Snapchat dozens (or hundreds!) of times a
day. While many teens find connecting with friends online a
positive experience, some just feel stressed out. This social
media-specific anxiety has a name: FOMO, also known as "fear
of missing out."
