MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL ROB HEREFORD

I am pleased to officially announce that Lolli Lucas has accepted the position as Laguna’s new Head of Upper School. Since joining us in the fall, Lolli has been an exceptionally strong collaborator. In addition to taking on the active role as Interim Head of Upper School, she has led grades 7 and 8 in the Middle School and provided valuable assistance to the college counseling office. Her input and insights into Laguna’s needs in the college counseling realm have been instrumental for our seniors throughout their application process and in the search for a new Director of College Counseling. She and I are both thrilled for her to focus exclusively on her responsibilities as Head of Upper School next year! Prior to Lolli’s tenure at Laguna Blanca, she served as the Upper School Director at Sierra Canyon School, and the Director of College Counseling at Brentwood School where she also worked as the Associate Director of Admissions and College Counseling. Additionally, she has held positions in the admission offices of The College of William and Mary and Pomona College. Lolli earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Vassar College, and a Doctorate of Education from UCLA.

I am also excited to share the news that Matt Struckmeyer has agreed to be our Director of College Counseling, beginning July 1. After a nationwide search that garnered over 50 qualified candidates, Lolli Lucas and I narrowed down the pool, eventually identifying three finalists. Two of those finalists spent a day on campus, meeting with a variety of community members—including students, parents, and faculty. Matt comes to us from Dunn School, where he has served as both an English teacher and the Director of College Counseling.  He earned his bachelor’s  from Franklin & Marshall College and master’s degrees from George Mason University and Harvard University. Matt has worked in education for 22 years, teaching middle school, high school, and college students. Prior to Dunn School, he served as a director and associate director of college counseling in rigorous college-prep schools on the east and west coasts. Matt has visited over 200 colleges and universities across the country, and considers it an honor to work with students as they navigate the college admission process.

THINKING GLOBALLY, WORKING LOCALLY

The seventh grade students delivered a total of 1,152 items (or 1,019 pounds) of food to the Santa Barbara Food Bank this week. They also worked up a sweat assisting warehouse employees by bagging rice and composting strawberries at the Food Bank.

Participating in the canned food drive is a wonderful opportunity for our students to positively impact our community, as one in four Santa Barbara County residents is served by the SB Food Bank.

The food drive is the continuation of a seventh grade interdisciplinary project between English, geography, and science which focuses on food and migration. Although part of the seventh grade curriculum, the entire Middle School got involved through the advisory program.

Congratulations to the Santa Rosa House (Grade 6) for collecting the most non-perishable food items, and earning points toward The House Cup!

THE POWER OF PUNCTUATION

Take a look at Mr. Flores' Spanish 3 Honors class project, a hilarious video demonstrating the mishaps that come with poor punctuation. This student-produced film shows the importance of punctuation, especially when reading a will and trying to determine the sole beneficiary.

LAGUNA STUDENT ART FEATURED AT SBCC

Two Laguna students were chosen to have their art work displayed in this year’s Arts Career Day Conference For Young Artists program at SBCC. Carina Tedesco ’18 conveys a colorful chameleon using watercolor and acrylics. Sully Israel ’19 used graphite to portray a moody architectural piece featuring a dark hallway. The students’ art was chosen by LBS Visual Arts Instructor Dug Uyesaka, who contributes to the organization.

Congratulations to featured artists Carina and Sully!

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL NEXT WEDNESDAY

A Experiential Ed/NOLA Night—Stories, Pictures, Projects—will take place on Wednesday, May 4 at 6:15 PM in Spaulding Auditorium. This year’s event will be slightly different from the format of the previous trip-sharing evenings following the Grades 9/10 interdisciplinary trips (NYC 2014 and London 2015). The trip-goers themselves will share stories and photos, and, in addition, the entire ninth-grade class will display the research-based New Orleans creative projects they have been working on for months. This part of the evening will be similar to the science fair model, and  will feature a wide variety of humanities projects, including posters, Mardi Gras shoebox floats, and website pages.

Special notes:

• Please email Dr. Tidey  if your child would like to have pizza before the event (5:45 PM outside Spaulding Auditorium).

• Students should not worry about changing clothes if they are coming from sports or other practices and the boys’ volleyball game.

• Ninth graders are not required to attend, but attendance is very strongly encouraged.
