REMINDER: WALK 4 WATER THIS SATURDAY 3/19 AT 10AM
Reprinted from SB
Independent
After
teaching math and economics at Laguna Blanca for 26 years, Paul
Chiment felt as if there was something missing from his students’
educational experience. “Kids were taking econ thinking they’d
learn about business,” he reflected while chatting at the
independent school’s Hope Ranch campus earlier this week, “but
they were learning about supply-and-demand curves.”

for and commitment to science throughout her life, and about how
she is working as a scientist now, even though she is in sales
for a STEM toy company called GoldieBlox. The central theme of
her talk was, "If at first you don’t succeed, try, try
again."
On Thursday, Sarah visited the Lower School campus

FIELD DAY
|
A message from Head of School Rob Hereford:
Thank
you to everyone who made Field Day a success! We couldn’t have
had more unfriendly weather, but thanks to the efforts of a
strong and creative team, I thought we had a terrific day! Thank
you to Jason and Andra for all of their hard work on the event
and for not being thrown off course by the rain. Everyone's
collective energy and great attitudes made what could have been a
dreary morning so much fun for all the students and the adults.
It’s too rare that we get together as an EK-12 group--I am so
grateful to everyone for the effort put into making our wonderful
community even better!

OWLS SET SAIL IN STRONG WINDS
AT LOCAL REGATTA
|
|
Last
weekend, Carson Shevitz ’16, the Captain of Laguna’s
sailing team, John Russo ’18, Charlie Jacobs ’20 and Natalie
McCaffery ’20 competed in the Silver Fleet at the UCSB Gaucho
Regatta. Sixty-five schools from around California and 300
students competed, including Santa Barbara High School and Dos
Pueblos High.
For Laguna, Carson skippered and Natalie crewed
one boat, finishing 6th in division; John skippered and Charlie
crewed the other, finishing 18th in division. Together the team
finished 12th.
Earlier this year, Carson and Charlie represented
Laguna’s sailing team in two regattas: Golden Bear in San
Francisco and Rose Bowl in Long Beach, one of the most
competitive regattas on the west coast. The dynamic duo earned an
impressive first place in one of their races.
Carson has been teaching children how to sail for
the past four years and started to mentor Laguna’s younger
sailors in the high school sailing program. He says he’s been
sailing most of his life, following the footsteps of his siblings
and racing ever since he could. “I took sailing beyond a sport
and currently hold a US Sailing Assoc. Sailing Instructor
certification and a USCG Merchant Mariner Captains License,” adds
Carson. Charlie, Natalie, and John started sailing for Laguna
this year and all have varying levels of experience. The group
practices twice a week after school with the Santa Barbara and
Dos Pueblos High School sailing teams and will often join the
UCSB team for more challenging practices.
Way to sail, Owls!
