HAPPY CHICKENS & STUDENTS AT THE LOWER
SCHOOL
|
The chickens at the Lower School are loving the running
space that the new fencing allows around their coop. The students
also love to spend recess with their feathered friends in the
newly renovated "Chicken Farm!"
Ms. Svedlund has reviewed all of the “rules of the
roost” with every grade level. Students have been taught how to
approach the chickens calmly and quietly, as well as how to pick
them up, hold, and release them. They also know what signs
indicate that a hen is laying an egg, how to check for eggs, and
properly latch everything securely afterward.

NINTH GRADERS SPEND
EXPERIENTIAL ED DAY OUT OF THE CLASSROOM
|
|
Dr.
Tidey's freshman English class is deeply immersed in analyzing
the amazing city of New Orleans. In addition to studying the
music, food, history, geography, street rituals, as well as the
racially and socially complex issues that make the city so
distinct, the students are focusing on socially innovative,
thoughtful approaches to the city’s challenges--in particular,
the ways in which the city has responded to the natural and
man-made crises of Katrina and the BP oil spill.
As a part of the Project Based Learning
initiative, the students spent a day out of the classroom this
week to watch, listen, and reflect upon stories about the Katrina
and BP oil spill disasters. As New Orleans residents at the time
of Hurricane Katrina, Rob Hereford and Amanda Whalen kicked off
the day by sharing their emotional firsthand experiences from the
day and the days that followed the disaster. Students also
experienced Creole cuisine at the Palace Grill, following a brief
Downtown Creative Writing experience. The day concluded with a
webcam chat with Ms. Caroline Fayard/BP Oil Spill Plaintiff's
lawyer and US Senate Candidate.
Although
not all students will join the spring break trip to New Orleans
from March 28-April 1, they are enjoying their time together here
in Santa Barbara, sharing in the process of sorting out
challenging and exciting creative research projects on a variety
of topics that the students have chosen.
SPECIAL
NOLA TRIP MEETING
For students headed to New Orleans later this month, there is
an optional-but-encouraged NOLA TRIP PARENT MEETING on Wednesday,
March 16 from 6-7PM in the library. Students will meet on Monday,
March 14 at lunch, but are welcome to attend the evening meeting
also. RSVP to Ashley Tidey.

LAGUNA ALUM SPENCER DUSEBOUT INVITES SB COMMUNITY
TO WALK 4 WATER ON SATURDAY, 3/19
|
Leading
by example is often easier in theory than in practice, but you
wouldn’t know that by looking at Laguna alum Spencer Dusebout
’11. He was recently featured as a TED X speaker at Oaks
Christian School where he spread his message that youth can do
anything – and that by “taking ideas and following through with
them, we will make an incredible impact on the world.” Though
only in his early twenties, Spencer stands on good authority to
say this.

RIDE IN THE REALM OF RIGHTS ROLLER PARK
|
Mrs. Alldredge filled us in on her blog, Humming
Along:
"For our Q3 exploration of justice, the
students built a "Realm of Rights Roller Park" as a joint
effort in their science and history classes. Shout out to Zack
Moore, Laguna's STEM coordinator, for his visioning and
collaboration on this innovative new project...and then they were
off! Lots of crazy experimentation, engineering, human rights discussions,
and thematic explorations ensued."
