STEVE CHAN NAMED AS NEW
HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL
|
|
|
Student
cheers were heard across campus on Thursday when Head of School
Rob Hereford announced that Steve Chan will be Laguna Blanca’s
new Head of Middle School effective July 1, 2016.
After a thorough national search and numerous interviews over the
past few months, the search recently culminated with three final
candidates who met with members of the Laguna community. “While
all the finalists were qualified for the position, it was clear
from the overwhelmingly positive feedback from students, faculty,
and parents, that Mr. Chan’s experience, proven track record, and
deep desire to make Laguna the best school it can be, made him
the right choice to lead Laguna’s Middle School,” said Mr.
Hereford.

Thursday, the Laguna community was treated to an art and wine
preview at the historic home and gallery of Laguna parent and

opportunity to work with Cassandria to create unique pieces of
art resembling her own unique style of reverse painting on glass.
Laguna parent and Art Project Coordinator Tracey Inman explains,
"Cassandria will be giving an artist talk with each EK
through Grade 4 class and explain not only her creative process
but also the way that she has used her dyslexia as a gift. The
students will learn the technique of reverse painting and will be
creating bold color field abstract pieces inspired by the
artist’s work.”
Guests
at Laguna’s spring benefit on February 27 will have the
opportunity to bid on the prized student pieces, as well as a

LAGUNA STUDENTS COMPETE
IN SB SILVER SQUASH TOURNAMENT
|
|
Three
Laguna students participated in the Santa Barbara Silver squash
tournament last weekend: Eleventh grader Zaira Paredes,
and Tenth graders Merith Velazquez and Clay Rodgers. The
tournament attracted more than 50 players from as far away as
Chicago and Portland, Oregon. Clay, a nationally-ranked player,
was the winner of the consolation draw for both the Boys Under 17
and Boys Under 19 draws. He lost by two points in the final game,
after having a match point in that game. The tournament,
sponsored by the national organization U.S. Squash, is one of
many tournaments around the country that count towards earning a
national ranking, but the only one held in Santa Barbara this
year.
Squash is an indoor racket sport which is rapidly
gaining in popularity and accessibility, especially on the West
Coast. The Santa Barbara School of Squash, a local non-profit, is
part of a national movement to train young squash players. Zaira
and Merith also participate in the School of Squash, along with
Clay and Laguna twelfth-grader Darwin Miguel. Zaira
traveled to Boston last fall to participate in a national women’s
tournament.

EIGHTH & FOURTH GRADE
STUDENTS BUDDY UP TO EXPLORE IDENTITY
|
|
This
quarter, eighth graders moved from focusing up and out (Mars) to
looking inward with many readings and writings about
personal identity. Students in Ms. Nordgaarden and Ms.
Alldredge's English classes worked in conjunction with the fourth
graders to explore some identity issues and then got together to
share what they had discovered. An art component was brought in
with fourth graders writing fingerprint poems, and eighth graders
writing, “Where I’m From” poems and creating identity masks which
represented their inner and outer traits. Masks and poems were
shared with fourth graders as all decorated their Time Capsule
envelopes, which will be opened in four years.
