NEW ART EXHIBIT ON CAMPUS: RAD BIKES
December 4 - January 15
The latest student exhibit in Emmons Art Gallery is a
study in positive and negative space entitled "Rad Bikes."
Fifth grade students took the subject matter of a bicycle and/or
bicycle parts to create an abstract composition done in ink and watercolor.
Given photos of various bikes, the talented artists did careful
sketches and then created their piece with the instructions to think
"outside the box" in regards to composition and design.
"Positive and negative space are terms that I
introduce in Laguna's fifth grade art curriculum, and I chose the
subject matter of a bicycle because everyone, including myself, has
enjoyed riding one at some point in their life. They also have
interesting shapes and design elements that are fun for the students
to draw," explains Art Instructor Melissa Abrams.
Everyone is invited to view these colorful paintings
at the Emmons Arts Center on the Hope Ranch campus during regular
school hours. The exhibit run until mid-January.

OWL QUALIFIES FOR JUNIOR OLYMPIC CHAMPIONSHIPS!
Laguna
seventh grader and avid swimmer, Maria Amezaga, has qualified
for the Southern California Swimming Short Course Junior Olympic
Championships in the 11-12 age group for the 100 yard butterfly.
Maria has been swimming on the Santa Barbara Swim Club
team since first grade. She and her teammates practice at the Los
Banos pool by the Harbor, and since a few of her teammates have also
qualified for the Junior Olympic Championships, the team will be well
represented!
The swimmers face off on December 12 at the Palm
Springs Swim Center, and we hope to see our Owl make a big splash!
Good luck, Maria!

COMMUNITY SERVICE HIGHLIGHT
Junior Gracie MacNeil's Spirit of Generosity Stretches Around the
World
Junior Grace
MacNeil embodies Laguna Blanca's core values of
character and community as a Development Ambassador for Rustic
Pathways, where for the past two summers, she has followed
her heart by giving back and helping others in need.
Her travels abroad with the nonprofit, humanity-driven
organization to Thailand and Costa Rica, have given her the unique
opportunity to gain a global view of society and exposure to
diversity and multiculturalism.
In true OWL fashion, Gracie took on a variety of
community service projects in Thailand from providing life-saving
swimming instruction to children who work in the rice fields, to
building facilities in an indigenous village near the Caribbean coast
at the only school in the area.
"My experiences allowed me to burst out of my
small, protected bubble to learn more about the world around me, and
ultimately grow as an individual," she said. "I have been
given the opportunity to improve facilities in schools, create a
sustainable fish farm business, and I have even taken care of rescued elephants."
Gracie explains that community service has taught her
how to cultivate relationships, and apply academic learning to real
human needs.
"My academic aspirations as of now are in
biology. After I graduate from Laguna, I hope to attend a good
college majoring in biology or pre-med. I hope to stay balanced and
continue working on my academics, doing community service, and
playing sports," she adds.

... a school that works to inspire lifelong learning from day one.
Where students are invited to explore the world around them, to ask
questions, and search for deeper understanding. Where teachers are
more than just educators; they are mentors.
Just imagine a school where students learn about real
world problems and collaborate on real world solutions. A school
where graduates are given the tools to be tomorrow's leaders, and are
taught to wield them with care and conviction.
It's easy for us to imagine, because this is Laguna
Blanca today. Our school's culture of positivity, growth, and
collaboration is a direct result of our community's generosity.
Laguna's Annual Fund provides a foundation of support that gives us
the strength and flexibility to offer students an environment that
promotes deeper learning.
Participation is not about the size of the gift, but
the strong statement that it sends about our community. We rely upon
your annual support to make every day at Laguna Blanca shine brighter
than the last, and inspire our imaginations to stretch even further.
Thank you.
