2015 FOSTER CARE HOLIDAY GIFT DRIVE
Two of Laguna Blanca's core values are "Community" and
"Character." In keeping with those values, we, as a school,
participate in various fundraising efforts throughout the year to
assist people, animals, and organizations in need, both locally and
globally. It is such a joy to see our students give from the heart
and take notice of those less fortunate.
Now in its sixth year, the Foster Child Holiday Gift
Drive remains a favorite of many on the Hope Ranch campus! There are
more than 800 children in the Santa Barbara County foster care
system, and each year LBS does its part to make the holiday season a
little brighter for many of these children without permanent homes.
The Dept. of Social Services gives us a supply of "wish
lists" from children (infants to teens) who are living with
foster families or in foster care group homes. Requests include items
such as clothes, toys, sports equipment, and gift cards. Also
included are the name, age, size, and suggested items for each child.
Wish lists were offered to students last week in advisory (there is
no obligation to participate). Should your child bring one home and
you choose not to participate, simply return the list to Andra Wilson
as soon as possible.
Gifts are due on Wednesday, December 9, when
participants bring their unwrapped gifts to Ruston Theater for a
special Gr. 5-12 assembly. At this time, Social Services
representatives will be in attendance, and we'll hand over the
hundreds of gifts provided by our families, faculty, and staff. It's
a most heartwarming assembly which you are all invited to attend!

Harvey was a smashing success! Congratulations to all of the
talented students and to Theater Director Dana Ortner for a wonderful
show. Many thanks to all of the supporters who came out to see the
twists and turns in the imaginative story of a man and his very strange
best friend.

Eighth Graders UNITE for Inaugural
Mission to Mars Victory
A group of
eighth grade students on team UNITE were awarded first prize for an
innovative presentation at the recent Mission to Mars competition,
held on the Hope Ranch campus.
Six teams of Laguna students battled in Spaulding
Auditorium for the culmination of the quarter-long project, with a
countdown of 30 minutes each to present plans to a fictitious
international conglomerate of investors eager to launch a private
company to Mars.

OWLS IN WONDERLAND CONTINUES TO SHINE DESPITE RAIN
The sixth annual Owls in Wonderland,
one of the most popular Lower School traditions, attracted over 600
attendees last Sunday to experience the magic of Laguna Blanca and
celebrate Alice
in Wonderland's 150th Anniversary.
Carnival highlights included a warm greeting from
Alice at the entrance, a Mad Hatter's Workshop, mad scientist, royal
croquet, art and music centers, tea parties, and white rabbits and
owls. Guests also had the chance to capture silly smiles and funny
memories in the "iPad Photo Phun" booth!
The Carnival was once again a success with the help of
dozens of parents, teachers, and students from both campuses. A
special thank you to event chairs Christina Waag and Tracey Inman.

LBS SONGBIRDS SOAR TO NEW HEIGHTS WITH LEGENDARY OPERA
SINGER, ANDREA BOCELLI
Laguna
students Audrey
Messer '25, Juliette
Duprau '25, and Lyndie Knipsel '23 were all
smiles as they shared the stage with world-renowned, Italian tenor
Andrea Bocelli to perform in his upcoming PBS show as he
salutes the cinema.
Filmed on September 18 at Hollywood's Dolby Theater, the
show features epic theme songs such as "Moon River" from Breakfast at Tiffany's,
"Maria" from Westside
Story, and more.
As members of the talented Adderley School for
Performing Arts Children's Choir, you will also see these Laguna
students singing along with Bocelli in two-part harmony--and in
perfect Italian--during an enchanting arrangement of "Sorridi
Amore Vai" from La Vita è bella, lyrics by Noa-Gil Dor and music
by Nocola Piovani with Italian lyrics by Alberto Curci. The
performance is accompanied by multi Grammy-winner David Foster, who
served as the musical director, announcer, and keyboardist during the
televised concert.
The
concert is scheduled to air on Friday, November 27 at 9PM on PBS.
Don't miss this opportunity to tune in and see our Owls sing along
with one of the greatest opera singers of our time.

INTRODUCING NEW FOURTH GRADE INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT
Laguna Blanca welcomes Mariana Roca as the new Lower
School Fourth Grade Instructional Assistant.
Mariana was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her
interest in foreign language began to flourish as a high school
student in Germany where she lived for four years, graduating from
the Ludwig Uhland-Schuler in Nuremberg. After this fulfilling
experience, she decided to learn French and Italian.
Mariana received a bachelor's degree in English and
earned an English as a Second Language teaching degree from CONSUDEC
University in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she taught English at
bilingual schools. She also holds a bachelor's degree in Literary and
Technical Translation from the Universidad Del Museo Social
Argentino.
Mariana lives in Santa Barbara with her husband and
two young daughters. She is very excited about the opportunity to
show her love for teaching and for world languages to all the
students.

STUDENTS
CAN DISCOVER THEIR FUTURE
Northeast College Tour: March 28-April 2
This tour will offer students an opportunity to
envision life beyond high school and guide their own college
selection process. They will tour a range of colleges and
universities in Boston, New Haven, and New York City.
Campus visits and exposure to local culture will help students to
discover what is interesting, exciting, and important to them for
their future. They'll return home more engaged in their college
search, with a better understanding of what types of schools to visit
with family.
The campus visits will provide a chance to meet
students, faculty, and administration to better position themselves
for the application process, and to find the right fit.
The 6-day trip includes visits to: Boston U, Boston
College, Northeastern U, Babson College, Tufts, Harvard, Brown, Yale,
NYU, Columbia, and more.
Departing
from Los Angeles with round-trip airfare, the trip also includes
hotel, meals, transportation, and sightseeing tours for one package
price of $2,619 (price valid until 12/1).
Application deadline: 11/30/15
