WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST STAFF MEMBERS
Please join us in welcoming new French Instructor Laila Hazen
to the LBS community! Laila began her career in Capital Markets
nearly 25 years ago after receiving her BA in French and Global
Studies and her MBA in International Management and Finance. She
then moved to Paris, France to join one of the oldest investment
banks in Europe. Between her undergraduate and masters studies,
Laila taught English in Caracas, Venezuela which is when she fell in
love with teaching. She often thought about returning to education,
and after the birth of her son, Myles, Laila moved to Santa Barbara
to open a language immersion preschool called Soleil Kid. "I
always loved my international career and owe my success in that arena
to being able to speak a foreign language. I wanted to share my
passion for languages with children and to spark their interest in countries
and cultures outside of their own."
Lindsey Davis is excited
to join the Laguna community as the new part-time communications
coordinator. In addition to her background in graphic design, digital
and studio art, Lindsey comes to Laguna with extensive experience in
retail and social media management with Wendy Foster, Anthropologie,
and Civilianaire. As a former Arts at Laguna camp counselor, she
already feels right at home on our Hope Ranch campus and knows many
members of our community. A Santa Barbara native, Lindsey is
currently pursuing her sociology degree at UCSB, and in her free time
she enjoys design, spending time at the beach with her puppy, and
cooking up delicious vegan dishes!

OFFENSIVE LINE ANCHOR HONORED IN FINAL SEASON
In his final season with the Owl's football team,
captain Bjorn
Lindskog '16 (#92 above) was selected by Presidio
Sports to the All-City team for the center position. With his notable
attitude and effort, Bjorn was also honored with the Coaches Award.
"It was an absolute pleasure coaching Bjorn these last two
seasons," recalls coach Shane Lopes. "The value he brought
to the team is a large part of why our teams have been so
competitive--Bjorn was a fierce technician on the field who led by
example and always gave full effort."
Congratulations to Bjorn and his team on an
outstanding season!

Over the holiday break, the varsity boys basketball
team competed in the Jim Bashore Classic. The tournament, which took
place at Carpinteria High School, featured a number of public schools

competition. The team earned victories over Hueneme and Nordhoff
while dropping close games to host Carpinteria and Santa Ynez. For
his efforts in the tournament, Pierce
O'Donnell '16 was named to the All-Tournament team.
WAY TO GO,

VIVA SPANISH LIT STUDENTS!
Upper School Spanish Literature students Travis Smilie '17
and Zaira
Paredes-Villegas '17 created and taught lessons on
Spanish culture for the fifth grade Spanish students this week.
The lessons were centered on cultural celebrations, including Dia de
los Muertos, Christmas, Rosca de Reyes, and Cindo de Mayo, among
others.
Fifth graders especially enjoyed the rosca de reyes
(kings' ring), which is a Spanish and Latin American king's cake
pastry traditionally eaten to celebrate Epiphany. Whoever finds the
baby Jesus figurine is blessed and must take the figurine to the
nearest church on February 2 (Candlemas Day, Día de la Candelaria).
In the Mexican culture, this person also has the responsibility of
hosting a dinner and providing tamales for the guests. (Better start
cooking, DeeDee!)
